Patterning in Mathematics - Elementary
Some researchers have determined that using the pattern-detecting and pattern-making areas of the brain is critical to proper development. For younger students, learning has to be hands-on, experiential, and relevant for patterns to develop. Since patterns arise in all parts of mathematics, this is a good area for elementary students to have rich experiences in pattern-detecting and pattern-making. Patterning in Mathematics for Elementary will focus on the strategy of using patterns to make meaning and to connect new information to known information.
Highlights: Participants will design a lesson in which their students use patterns to improve understanding of a problem. The lesson will incorporate current brain research and theory of multiple intelligences. Class participants will share their lessons in the Conference Center and be required to provide and respond to feedback on fellow teachers' lessons.
Run time and Credit Availability: Course runs 8 weeks. Graduate credit is available from California State University-Bakersfield for $435.
- Length: 56Day
