Decoding Through Clues
Current research has found that decoding through clues will allow students to use context clues and word knowledge to identify unknown words, which will build comprehension and fluency in reading. Decoding through clues is a way for students to expand on their existing vocabulary knowledge, as well as allowing them to use verbal thinking processes to make sense of a word in context.
Highlights: This course will:
- Explicitly teach and model the strategies of using spelling cues, vocabulary knowledge and context clues for word analysis in reading.
- Demonstrate strategies for decoding an unfamiliar word and determining meaning of the word.
- Demonstrate the use of verbal thinking processes using context, prefixes, suffixes, and root words to facilitate word pronunciation and meaning.
- Encourage participants to apply learned concepts in their classrooms and reflect on the observed impact on student learning, keeping in mind that there are different types of learners in the classroom.
